Matsumoto Jun with Akanishi Jin: Our Secrets (Bokura no Himegoto)
This month¡Çs IZM features Matsumoto. Selecting the Conversation option, the companion he has picked is ¡ÆMinna no Terebi¡Ç (NTV) co-star, KAT-TUN¡Çs Akanishi Jin. Why has he done so when they seldom interact? To shrink the distance between them?
Matsumoto wins in billards, Akanishi wins at darts. Shooting black and white photos of each other (above), the two begin to smile as they start getting into the games. As anxiety fades and the mood calms, the conversation starts. What is the reason behind Matsumoto¡Çs asking for Akanishi this time¡Ä?
Matsumoto: Thanks for today
Akanishi: Ah, hai. When I heard about this conversation, I was like, ¡ÈWhy me? Are you angry?¡É (laughs)
Matsumoto: Why [in the assuring way], I¡Çm not angry~(laughs). Apart from that, it was your birthday the other day (4 July) wasn¡Çt it? Happy birthday!
Akanishi: Thank you.
Matsumoto: How old are you now?
Akanishi: I¡Çm 21. That¡Çs one year younger than Jun-kun.
Matsumoto: Ah, is that so? That means we¡Çre technically the same age (He¡Çll be 22 on 30 August).
Akanishi: I see Jun-kun as older than me.
Matsumoto: (Laughing) Is that because I¡Çm old-mannish? [i.e, ¡ÈOssan kusai¡É]
Akanishi: (Protesting, in a fluster) It¡Çs not that¡Äsomehow, you just feel like you¡Çre older or something like that (laughs uncomfortably). Um, actually, there are lots of times when the seniors don¡Çt care about KAT-TUN. If I were in the seniors¡Ç shoes I think I¡Çd hate us too. I think they see us as insolent, but the truth is that all of us are cautious people. If we aren¡Çt used to someone we won¡Çt talk. Even if we do, it¡Çs just an awkward one or two words or so.
Matsumoto: Were you nervous when we met on ¡ÆMinTere¡Ç too?
Akanishi: Yes, I was nervous. I¡Çm used to meeting you, but I didn¡Çt know what I was supposed to say.
Matsumoto: (laughs). It¡Çll be okay if you just say a casual ¡È¡ÇMorning!¡É(laughs). But I used to be like this too long ago. Although I¡Çd speak when I was spoken to, the exchange would end just like that. Although I¡Çve been on the same programme as KAT-TUN for almost half a year, I still completely don¡Çt know what sort of person each member is. Of everyone on the programme, we¡Çre the only ones from the same company, and I thought, I¡Çd like the 7 of us to have fun doing this together~. So that¡Çs why I took a chance and called you out (laughs). On top of that, among my friends, there¡Çs this fellow who likes you quite a bit. It¡Çs a guy. He often says me, ¡ÈLet me meet Akanishi!¡É, but I don¡Çt know your phone number or anything. That¡Çs also one reason I got you to come today (laughs). So, how are the other members? ¡ÄLike Ueda, for instance, he¡Çs interesting (laughs).
Akanishi: Abunakkashiku nai desu ka? (Because he doesn¡Çt seem dangerous? /Isn¡Çt he dangerous?/Isn¡Çt this dangerous?)
Matsumoto: You can never tell that he¡Çs thinking. He likes Gackt?
Akanishi: It seems that he doesn¡Çt now. Although he did in the past and imitated him, it¡Çs as if he¡Çs in his own world now.
Matsumoto: What about Taguchi?
Akanishi: He likes Shounentai.
Matsumoto: The other day, I met him when I went to watch Sakamoto (Masayuki)-kun¡Çs play, and we talked a little. He was telling me that he¡Çd like to do a musical.
Akanishi: Taguchi likes plays a lot. And Koki, in a certain way, is the most cautious of all.
Matsumoto: And so it seems (laughs). Koki¡Çs the oldest isn¡Çt he? I was in high school with him.
Akanishi: Nakamaru is the neutral type. He¡Çs the most peace loving. [Is Jin making a pun here? The term he used was ¡Æmarui¡Ç (round/peaceful). Maru, marui¡Ä] Apart from Taguchi and Nakamaru, aren¡Çt the rest of us quick tempered? Put that together, plus the fact that we all have our own worlds too.
Matsumoto: What about Kamenashi-kun?
Akanishi: He¡Çs the mediator. Steady-going.
Matsumoto: I see. So, what kind of person is Akanishi-kun?
Akanishi: I¡Çm selfish, quite a bit. Self-centered. If we met at work, I probably wouldn¡Çt be very easy to deal with. Though I think it isn¡Çt so outside of work, in my own opinion (laughs).
Matsumoto: So (outside of work) you all become good friends immediately?
Akanishi: Not so. We all (everyone in KAT-TUN) get pretty tense if it¡Çs a first meeting. But we like touching the guys we get along with.
Matsumoto: Hah~, is that a unique way of getting to know people?
Akanishi: Yes it is (laughs).
Matsumoto: You said you were self-centered?
Akanishi: Yup (laughs). Like, when we¡Çre planning our concerts, I can¡Çt stand it when my suggestions don¡Çt get through. While I¡Çd consider everyone else¡Çs ideas too, I just want to give my own direction a try.
Matsumoto: I see. So you try to coax the rest (into giving your way a try)?
Akanishi: Yes (laughs).
Matsumoto: Hahaha, that¡Çs extremely similar (to myself)¡ÄOh, and I know quite a bit of your secrets (smirking). So, I¡Çd like to have a nice comfortable chat with you about those strange matters. We¡Çre kind of running short of time today. The wall is thick (laughs). Do I have to make you drink?
Akanishi: No, I¡Çll talk even without drinking! I¡Çll talk about anything.
Matsumoto: How about tea?
Akanishi: Yes that will be okay, please (laughs).
This month¡Çs dream fulfillment meter: 90%
Matsumoto: ¡ÈHow was today?¡É
Akanishi: ¡ÈIt was fun.¡É
Matsumoto: ¡ÈYup, so it¡Çs 90%. I found it fun too. Even though you still won¡Çt open your heart.¡É
Akanishi: ¡È Nah, although it felt really awkward at first, now¡Ä¡É
Matsumoto: ¡ÈDon¡Çt say it felt awkward in front of the person concerned! I have a reputation for being nice (laughs).¡É

Comments: I find this article extremely interesting. It's one of the frankest, most revealing ones I've come across.
Point 1: Note that when Jin and Jun were talking about the other members of Kattun, Jin talks the most warmly about Junno and Maru. He even brought up Maru without Jun's prodding. On the other hand...he doesn't even mention Kame until prompted, and even then he doesn't say much. 2 short, curt sentences. But this time, their friendship certainly wasn't going on well.
Point 2: The interview definitely shows off Jin's straightfoorwardness. I'm amazed by how candid he was, about how he thinks the seniors view KATTUN, about their perceived 'insolence', even about the fact that he probably isn't very nice to be with at work. It's Duet after all, usually the artiste's wouldn't be so open about stuff like that; they'd put it in a vague way if they even hinted at all. Moreover, i's a conversation with a senior, and one he's not particularly close to. I guess such candidness may rub some seniors the wrong way. Thank goodness MatsuJun seems open minded.
Point 3: MatsuJun really is interested in Jin, huh. I think there must have been a lot of talk about Jin, etc etc, for MatsuJun to know about his 'secrets'! or at least, be interested enough to ask to talk to him in an interview, and, even more, ask him out for tea after that so that they can have a nice long conversation. 1. he really wants to get to know KATTUN better 2. There's something about Jin that makes Jun curious
I think it sets the background for Jin's -too-comfortable-with-Jun-to-the-point-of-'disrespect' bantering with Jun on Utawara. ;)
Point 4: Jun isn't bragging when he says he has a reputation for being nice. You can see how Jin just gradually warms up to him, even though things started out so awkwardly.
--Just my more than 2 cents worth.
